Hey, does anyone remember this anime at all? It's the Tenchi Muyo spin-off with his little sister, friend or whatever relation she has with him. The anime mostly involves a girl named Sasami being summoned to do magical deeds, after she was granted powers by an unknown, future queen of a far away planet. And basically, she transforms into magical girl Pretty Sammy (no, that is not just for the title; she is literally called "Pretty Sammy" throughout the whole thing) to save the day every episode, by a villain whom I won't spoil since it has a significant role in the plot. The nineties anime series had it in a comedic role throughout the whole ordeal, well the OVA was more serious about it.
In total, there is an OVA and an anime series. They are very low-key, the anime especially; and I recently managed to watch the latter on a stroke of luck that one website had the episodes, well the OVA was quite easy to find and even came in dub. That is one disadvantage to the anime is that its lack of relevance even led to it not receiving an official dub, though it was planned. It comes across as very scarce, due to its unpopularity maybe. I thought it was good, but I relate on its reputation since it had too much cheesiness in it, but I really admired how upbeat and innocent Sasami's family was in it. Perhaps most of you are thinking I am referring to this anime:
Well, no. Firstly, the girl was renamed Sasami in this; well, actually that is her original name, but in her magical girl form she goes by no nickname and simply remains Sasami, well in the nineties series Sammy was her persona's name. Both this one and the aforementioned nineties series share similarities, obviously the magical girl bit; and the characters. Sasami's best friend Misao, for one, does not even become acquainted with her until middle school well in the nineties anime she is her childhood friend. In both series, Misao plays a major role in the plot which is another similarity. I won't spoil too much there so you can still enjoy it.
Sasami herself changed quite a bit, appearance-wise. Removed is a symbol on her forehead that I think represented her magic, gone are her freckles and her hair is more cyan than blue, perhaps due to her best friend going from black hair to blue in order to give the series a more colorful feel. If I remember right, she is a fifth grader so her approximate age should be between eleven to twelve. She was the same age in the nineties one, but gives off major high school girl vibes and looks more developed than what her age should represent; the one change the new series did right was make her LOOK her age. But outside her physical traits, she is basically the same girl with the same optimistic and caring personality. If you can't take my word on it, you tell me if she looks like a middle schooler:
No middle school girl should have that kind of figure, just begging for pedophiles here. But in the anime she has a more younger look but that's only in her hair and face, which resemble the new series a bit more in that it is the same cyan hair color and style. Oh, maybe I should mention the relation to Tenchi Muyo as a final note, given it IS its spin-off. Well, Tenchi himself appears in one of the series as Sasami's older brother; so he actually is involved in one, but mainly as a recurring character. The series he is in is rather short, but it does well at referencing his personality and even throws in a few other Tenchi Muyo characters, and Sasami is more similar to her appearance in that show as well. In the longer running series, Tenchi only has one appearance; but not as a cameo. He is in one whole episode that revolves around him. This is the one where Sasami has a new look different from her Tenchi Muyo concept, so perhaps they really were aiming for a legit spin-off on it.
So, all in all, Sasami had three phases. She had her Tenchi Muyo look used in the OVA that even had Tenchi as a character, she had her new one in the twenty-first century spin-off that made her look significantly more younger and finally one in-between the two that is from the anime. So, which ones do you remember watching yourself? Did you find out via the new one like myself, or did you perhaps watch the nineties ones first?
