I'm PSU stumped re: Capacity and Brand

mercredi 11 mars 2015

A week ago I decided to build my first desktop pc. I had to learn a lot but except for these PSU questions I've done well enough on my own. However, e "Which PSU" has been a big challenge, mostly because of disagreement between sources of info. CoolerMasters PSU picker recommends 750W. All other pickers recommend 1000W. I prefer to believe 750w because I want it to be quiet and also light. I will be transporting this PC regularly from home to vacation home and back. On the other hand I want it to be future proof because of potential future GPU upgrades.

Here is my list of components:

95W CPU i4790 overclocked to about 4.6 Ghz w Noctua fan and heat sink

140W GPU Gtx-970 factory overclocked

140W GPU Gtx-970 factory overclocked

12W Six fans

12W Two HDD and two SSD

----------

388w Total

The 95W for the CPU is estimated for the OC. Stock its 86W. I believe the CPU and GPU will rarely both be working hard simulaneously because the CPU is overkill while gaming. While gaming the GPUs will be working hard but maybe not too hard because they have V-Synch which, if I understand correctly, runs the monitor at 60fps to match its 60Hz refresh rate.

The CPU will work hardest during photo editing like merging large photo files for panarama's. During this activity the two GPU's will yawn. They'll be driving a 4k monitor but that only stresses them during games.

Based on the 388W total I would think a 600W PSU would be plenty. Am I missing something or are the guestimators being overly cautious? What capacity do you recommend?

Based on my research until yesterday I was thinking Seasonic is a safe bet and I was happy to have at least made that decision but then I read about the "Green glue... whine... SMD components on the bottom. At some point in time, Seasonic started pouring green glue on the bottom part of SB rail. And I got information that it is whining even when turned off = SB rail is what whines."

According to reviews on NewEgg and Amazon it seems all PSU manufacturers have bad batches and some crazy customers too. :-) But, that doesn't make picking a brand any easier.

So, I will probably opt for a Platinum PSU for low noise and efficiency. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Doug
