I purchased a SS-1200XP³ a few days ago. The first thing I noticed when I turned it on was that the relay had a very different sound to the ones in all my X-Series units. The X-Series PSUs (of various generations) all had a sharper *snap* noise. More of a 'tick', while this 1200W Platinum has a 'tock'. Has anyone here who has experience with X and Platinum units noticed any such variation?
I'm only asking because today I shut down the system I had the PSU in and it didn't turn off properly. Windows shut down, I heard the HDD spin down, but the PC just kept running. I was wondering if perhaps the relay could be defective in some way.
Another probably unrelated incident, but I'll mention it anyway: The first system I had the PSU on consisted of all verified-working (several months old) hardware except for the SS-1200XP³ and a new motherboard purchased with it. After running normally for half a day, I shut it down and when I went to boot it again the motherboard was dead (standby power LED on the board was out, and the power button had no effect). The motherboard probably died spontaneously, but I can't rule out the possibility of the PSU having killed it. Now I have the PSU on an expendable old p45 system, and it seems to be fine (apart from the abovementioned failure to shut down - a single incident so far). Like I said, the dead motherboard probably has nothing to do with the PSU, but if any of the above sounds suspicious to you let me know.
So do the larger Seasonic units maybe have a different relay in them than the smaller (850W and below) X-Series with a duller sound signature?
